What could you do with 8 months’ salary?

Well, it all depends. If you are a domestic helper maybe you could purchase major appliances such as a new refrigerator or stove. A teacher could probably make full or majority tuition payment on a long desired graduate programme. If you are a corporate buff however, you could more than likely purchase a few new cars, a piece of land or a 2 bedroom townhouse!

There may be a debate about which of these persons should receive the highest remuneration but that is not the point of this blog entry. Whichever category you fall in, 8 months’ salary is a significant amount of financial resources that can certainly help to achieve a big goal.

The disciples who were walking with Jesus surmised that it would take just about 8 months’ wages to achieve the big goal of feeding the 5000 persons who gathered to hear Jesus speak. It’s rather nice that they were so considerate in thinking that these uninvited guests could do with something to eat. Thankfully due to the unlimited powers of the master, no one had to forgo their wages. Instead He took a little boy’s 2 loaves of bread and 5 fish and miraculously shared it with the multitude of 5000.

Sometimes we have big goals and wisely (and discouragingly) count the costs for their achievement. This is half wise. The bible asks us to carefully consider the costs for doing things but when we are walking with the master we have access to supernatural resources. We CAN achieve the big goals.

For the big goal of feeding the multitude, would you have pointed out that some little boy had 2 fish and 5 loaves of bread or would you have thought it too ridiculous to mention? Worst yet, if you had the vacancy of mind to mention it, would you have raised an alarm when Jesus started breaking the 2 fish and 5 loaves of bread to feed the army of followers that no doubt could fill Emancipation Park in Kingston, Jamaica? Maybe. I might have.

There is a lot to learn from this act of great hospitality and supernatural provision.

• We can count the cost of our big goals but must go to God with what we have even it is only 5 loaves and 2 fish

• We must bring what we have to him in faith believing that God is not limited by our resources or our thought patterns.

• The big goal here was to enable 5000 persons to come in contact with God’s word – this is important to God. Are about you about doing things that are important to God and his Kingdom? Or are you about your own glorious ambitions that have nothing to do with pleasing the Lord?

• We must praise God who can increase 2 fish and 5 loaves of bread to the equivalent of 8 months’ salary on a sunny afternoon!

By the way, if God could multiply 2 fish and 5 loaves to such miraculous proportions…what could he actually do with 8 months’ salary? Feed 5 million? Well, if it’s the corporate buff’s salary, he could surely feed the world!
